Muscle energy techniques (MET’s) are a form of assisted stretching that originated in the 1950’s in the field of osteopathy. Their development paralleled that of PNF techniques (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) so historically there has been some confusion between the two. Although both are forms of assisted stretching and the aim of both is to increase flexibility, there are distinct differences between them. This course focuses primarily on MET but also touches on PNF.
MET’s aim to lengthen a muscle that is limited by neurological restrictions, focusing on the manipulation of the reactions of muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs (mechanoreceptors that sense length and tension respectively) by using the principles of autogenic and reciprocal inhibition. In contrast to static stretching, a passive technique in which the therapist does all the work, MET involves the active participation of the client and the results are immediate and longer lasting.
In addition to effectively treating muscular dysfunctions by increasing flexibility, MET’s are a powerful tool used by osteopaths, physiotherapists and other manual therapists to increase overall joint restrictions and mobility, strengthen weakened muscles and reduce localised oedema. Within both the clinic and the PT environments they can help improve the client’s range of movement (ROM), reduce associated pain, prevent impairment of functional movement and consequently decrease risk of injury.
Achieve improved clinical results by learning how to incorporate MET’s into your treatment plans and apply them efficiently and safely!
